College Pro Painters – Very unprofessional!

I’ve been trying to get some bids for a new roof and an exterior paint job on my home of two years and as I have seen the handmade signs on the road-side for many years in the Portland Metro area advertising “College Pro Painters”, I decided to call them and get an estimate.  I called and made an in-home appointment for 1:00 PM on July 13th, 2013, approximately ten days prior to the actual appointment.

On the day of the appointment at 1:15 PM (yes, they were late!) they called and left a message to say that they, “Would be on time for our 2:00 PM appointment.”  I guess they must have thought that as I’m a senior that I wouldn’t notice the delayed appointment time!  Anyway, come 2:05 PM (yes, late again!) a woman named “Lauren” called to cancel and asked to reschedule?!!  I told “Lauren” that due to their lack of professionalism and their un-business-like way of conducting their operation, I would not now or ever be interested in using their services!  And then hung up the phone.

Today is July 18, 2013 and guess who just called me to state that she had a note that I was interested in getting an estimate?!! You’re kidding me right? Evidently at her young age she has already developed selective senility considering “Lauren” and I spoke only five days ago!  She also didn’t like me “bad-mouthing” her company and kept trying to cut me off by speaking over me, and doing it rather loudly!

Admittedly she tried to offer me a “trim paint job” as recompense for the bad service and their rude behavior, but putting up with more scheduling headaches from them for the sake of paint on a few skinny boards . . . not worth the attitude.  Forget ’em! I don’t know what her/their problem is but if she is indicative of their company and the other employees they use, then the world would be better off if they’d just closed their doors, permanently!

By the way, a different girl this time called a couple of days ago saying she received a note stating “I might be interested in an estimate” . . . .  sheer stupidity!!  And they’re supposedly “college educated”?  Hmmmm . . . I doubt it.

Sorry, I’ve been missing!

It was on Labor Day that I found I wasn’t feeling quite right. Well I was not only light-headed and slightly disoriented, but was having a screaming migraine headache.  So bad that it required me to cover my eyes to block out the light when I went outside for the trip to the Emergency Clinic.  Once there they covered my eyes with cool, damp cloths.  Then the shaking started.  I couldn’t control it no matter how hard I tried.

After calling in help to try to figure out what was happening to me, they all decided that I needed to go to the Emergency Room at the hospital for proper treatment.  I did after a quick glimpse from under the cloth noticed that I had two Ambulance staff there as well as two Firemen Paramedics, two Firemen, two doctors, three nurses, one intern and my wife!  So they loaded me up in the Ambulance and we were on the way with me blindfolded again.

Being a Vietnam vet, I wanted to go to the V.A.’s Emergency Room at their hospital.  Then I heard them tell my wife that I probably wouldn’t make it that far!!  Say what!  They told my wife that I was having cardiac troubles and needed care right away!  Then they asked me and I said, “Let’s go to the closer community hospital then.”  So we changed direction and I found myself in the local hospital’s emergency room soon after.

So after multiple doctors and nurses, a chest x-ray,  a Cat-scan, blood draws, injected meds and other such goings-on, they all made a decision and I was diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation.  So my heart goes thuh-thump alright, but every so often it decides to go much faster.  So now its been about three weeks and they are still trying to decide what the medicines are that they will prescribe for the condition.

The V.A. system isn’t known for its lightening speed but they get the job done and by the way, did I mention that my doctor has left the V.A.?  So I need not only new meds, but a new doctor as well.  Though I have to admit, the V.A. has been pretty good to me up till now and I’m sure that they will continue to give good service into the future.  Meanwhile it’s hurry-up and wait.  That sure do sound familiar. . . . .

H&W Carpets review

It’s been almost a year since I hired H&W Carpets to supply and install the flooring in our newly purchased 1974 ranch home. I had to wait this long to write this review for a reason. It was to give them enough time to follow-up on the job (which they didn’t) and time for my temper to cool! Their address is given as: 19505 SW Tualatin Valley Hwy, Aloha, Oregon.

In the beginning everything went as expected, it was near job completion that he (our sales rep) showed us “attitude” in a comment he made to us about when the payment in full was due! Snarky indeed! We have also found poor quality workmanship in the way they installed the flooring. One section of the vinyl was installed leaving what could best be described as a bubble in the flooring upon completion. A bubble approximately 16 inches in diameter!

In another part of the house, the carpet was cut to reinstall the floor heat register to the heat ducting. Only problem is, in addition to the rectangular cut-out, they also made a second cut from one end of the cut-out and extended it out into the flooring where they proceeded to make a large letter “e” cut into the carpet.

My 45+ year construction background tells me that the 4-inch large “e” cut in the carpet field was the installer trying to find the register opening in the floor in the beginning. He then extended it over to cut the rectangular shaped hole afterwards. The fact that he made this excessively large cut without repairing the damage shows poor work ethics as well as a bit of dishonesty in failing to bring it to the attention of either his boss or myself, the buyer.

In both cases what with the vinyl “bubble” and the sliced-up carpet, a proper installer taking pride in his work would have ripped out the damaged flooring and replaced it with new at his own expense if need be, instead of trying to hide his work and hope the buyer doesn’t notice his shoddy workmanship. With numerous flooring suppliers around, I cannot in good faith recommend H&W Carpets, Inc. to anyone. Nor would I even allow them into my house again to clean my floor much less buy and install a new one. My rating? Is there such thing as a Negative Star Rating?

Too bad, as I prefer doing business with local mom and pop shops and tradespeople. Just not this one I guess!

Arlington Cemetery update . . . again?

For those of you keeping score, this is my fifth update since my original post on June 11th of last year.  All about the ongoing screw-up happening at our national cemetery on misidentified graves.  They are dated: June 11th (the original), June 21, July 27, August 4 and September 21.  If you’re curious or need a refresher on these postings, just do a search on this blog for “Arlington Cemetery”.

Law Forces Accounting at Arlington

A law enacted in December seeks to ensure better management of Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Public Law 111-339 requires the Army secretary to provide Congress a full accounting of all 320,000 graves and an evaluation of management practices at the Army-run cemetery.

According to the House VA Committee, the law requires a report by Dec. 22, 2011, that includes notification of any gravesite discrepancies, an accounting of all contracts and a status update on implementation of recent Army directives.

I guess we’ll see come Christmas time if they accomplish their goal or not.  I hope they’re successful as it will help to put the hearts and minds of many families to rest, finally. May He watch over them forever!

An update on the Arlington Cemetery fiasco

Appears the ongoing investigation into the total screw-up at Arlington National Cemetery involving the true locations and names of the deceased interred there will involve a lot more graves than first thought, at least according to Sen. Claire McCaskill (D) who is on the subcommittee investigating the potential contracting fraud there. The article mentioned here can be found at Military.Com located here

Hundreds of Bodies Misidentified at Arlington!-Follow up

This is a follow-up article to my earlier post on June 11, 2010 about the above titled news article on Military.Com.  This latest news listing can be found on their website here.  After reading the news story all I can wonder is this — after mishandling, burying and misidentifying literally hundreds of bodies, upsetting untold number of parents, husbands, wives, sons and daughters as to the handling and whereabouts of their family members, than I they receive is a fine, and a two-year probation?  Unbelievable!!  The Virginia funeral home should have been put out of business or at least been barred from Arlington or any other national cemeteries.  Let a more patriotic and honorable company take over the business for Uncle Sam and the V.A..  As a fellow Vet, I take a little comfort in knowing where I will find my last repose, and I sure as hell heck hope it won’t be with the wrong name and/or site because of idiots such as this!!
